The Life Flight pilots have a wealth of experience and extensive training to manage some of the most challenging conditions in the world. They also get to enjoy some of the best views in the world!
The pilot takes the lead of the mission. They:
Plan the flight course and safely navigate through rain, cloud, wind, wires, etc.
Communicate with the airport and other aircraft users. During the day, the average take-off time is 8 minutes. At Wellington Airport, inbound aircraft are often delayed briefly in landing so the Westpac Rescue Helicopter can take off immediately.

After eight years as a casual Fixed Wing crewman, I became a crewman in 2020. With a background in fire services and a love of aviation, I realised a dream to help people in need while doing what I love. My spare time involves motorbikes, tractors, travel or my lifestyle block.
