Westpac Rescue Helicopter Pilots

The Life Flight pilots have a wealth of experience and extensive training to manage some of the most challenging conditions in the world. They also get to enjoy some of the best views in the world!

The pilot takes the lead of the mission. They:

• Plan the flight course and safely navigate through rain, cloud, wind, wires, etc.
• Communicate with the airport and other aircraft users. During the day, the average take-off time is 8 minutes. At Wellington Airport, inbound aircraft are often delayed briefly in landing so the Westpac Rescue Helicopter can take off immediately.
• Assist the medical team when needed.

Our pilots are supplied through Search and Rescue Services Ltd (SRSL) and the Central Air Ambulance Rescue Limited (CAARL). These charitable companies manage the operations and provision of Helicopter Pilots to the five regional charitable helicopter trusts across New Zealand. https://www.caarl.org.nz/
