Life Flight

Each week 28 people need time-critical aeromedical care. With your support, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter and Air Ambulance Planes are there in their moment of need.

Meet Steve - Air Ambulance Crewperson

After 25 years helping Kiwis in their moments of greatest need, air ambulance crewman Steve will soon be putting away his flight boots for the last time. He has flown thousands of missions – some joyful, some heartbreaking – always bringing calm, skill, and compassion to patients when it mattered most.

Looking back over 25 years, what stands out as the most memorable moment or mission for you?

I remember many jobs for different reasons. Some happy, some very sad. It’s a great privilege to help people on what can sometimes be the worst day of their lives. Comforting patients and their loved ones in times of uncertainty is humbling and satisfying.

How has the role of an Air Ambulance Crew member changed since you first started?

The core role has stayed the same: moving patients from one hospital to another to get the care they need. But the operation has gotten bigger and busier. There’s also more specialised equipment, so we’re able to transport more complicated cases.

What has kept you passionate about this work?

No two days are the same. Being part of a team that wants the best for every patient is rewarding. The job can be stressful, but a thank-you letter or message is satisfying.

We get to see some amazing sights – not many people have an “office window” like us – from auroras and Halley’s Comet to New Zealand changing through the seasons.

What does reaching 25 years of service mean to you personally?

Honestly, it’s just another number. What matters is being part of a team that has helped thousands of people.

Is there a message you’d like to share with the supporters who have stood by Life Flight throughout your journey?

Life Flight wouldn’t exist without community support. On behalf of all patients we’ve flown, thank you. Many donors never expect to need us – until they do. One lesson I’ve learned: life can change in an instant, so enjoy every day.
