Meet our team

Our team is made up of highly trained, passionate and dedicated people. Learn about them and the diversity of their roles.

Life Flight Crew

Life Flight’s Westpac Rescue Helicopter and Air Ambulance Plane crew are highly trained specialists. They are responsible for coordinating our emergency air services and ensuring a safe and secure working environment at all times.

The crews’ search and rescue skills enable them to pull a victim out of a raging sea, find a lost person in dense bush and orientate our pilots when flying the helicopter close to cliff edges, boat masts and other challenging obstacles.

The crew keeps all relevant parties informed of a patient’s status throughout a transfer including hospitals, road ambulances and air traffic control. The crew are essential to ensuring the best outcomes for our patients.

Pilots

Our pilots fly in some of the toughest weather conditions in the world. They are highly skilled, respected and capable.

In addition to all the other important details they pay mind to, they are also careful to keep their precious cargo safe and comfortable. This means things like an extra-soft landing for a spinal injury patient or flying low to avoid a cabin pressure change for someone with a brain injury.

Aviation partners Airwork Group and Fieldair Holdings help supply our pilots.

Medical Teams

Paramedics

All ambulance and rescue missions on our Westpac Rescue Helicopter have an Intensive Care paramedic on board. Their job includes being winched out of the helicopter during rescue missions and providing life-saving care to patients.

Our paramedics are among the most highly skilled in the country. They are supplied through a joint venture with Wellington Free Ambulance and come at a significant financial cost to Life Flight.

Flight Nurses and Doctors

The flight nurses and doctors from Wellington Regional Hospital require specialist aero-medical training before joining Life Flight’s team.

They ensure a high level of care is provided to patients onboard our aircraft.

To be a member of this team requires significant skill and experience.
