Mackenzie's rapid transfer
Mackenzie was a 21-year-old Art History student when she was caught in a life-threatening car crash.
Trapped in her vehicle with multiple injuries, Life Flight's Westpac Rescue Helicopter Team helped get her safely out and into the helicopter.
From a country road in the Wairarapa, she needed to get to Wellington Hospital urgently.
Even with constant medical attention while in the air, Mackenzie's vital signs were critically low by the time they landed at the hospital. The emergency surgery team were ready and waiting when they arrived.
As soon as Mackenzie was stable enough, it was imperative to send her north for further specialist surgery available only in Auckland.
Life Flight's Air Ambulance Plane and transfer team were equipped to fly her there safely, packed and stabilised for the journey.
Mackenzie is now well on the road to a full recovery. She has since graduated from University and is working in a job that she loves.
"I don't even know how to say how lucky I am that Life Flight was there, because if they hadn't been there, I wouldn't be here, and that's pretty big. So, I owe them my life."
You can watch Mackenzie's story on the Life Flight TV Series.
