Supporter stories

We are incredibly fortunate to receive support in many different ways. Juliet Best, Life Flight Artist 2018/19, is using her talents as an artist to help keep us flying.

The local artist and Wellingtonian first collaborated with us to create an exclusive painting to be sold at our Life Flight Gala Dinner presented by Hiremaster in 2017.

This collaboration happened following an experience she had in Abel Tasman National Park when she nearly needed our Westpac Rescue Helicopter to help her son after a fall down a bank. Afterward, she was inspired to do something to raise funds and awareness for Life Flight.

"We were fortunate there was a nurse in the same DOC hut as us," says Juliet. "She was able to tend to my son and her family helped us get back to the boat. But, it made me consider how lucky we are to have Life Flight in our community."

"Life Flight add value to our healthy outdoor Kiwi lives - even when you don't need them. Just knowing they are there is comforting." - Juliet

Juliet flew with our Westpac Chopper team on a training mission to Pencarrow Head and painted “Noble Flight” as a result. The gorgeous painting, featuring hand applied sheets of gold leaf, was the biggest fund raiser at the 2017 Gala, bringing in $7,000 – 100% donated to Life Flight. That covers the cost of nearly three missions!

Our Chief Executive Ian Pirie says Juliet is a natural fit with our organisation.

“With her amazing talent, passion for and commitment to our work, we are proud and grateful to have Juliet as our inaugural Life Flight Artist.”

More about Juliet

My work is inspired by the light - that is the soul of my paintings. My love of New Zealand and all its beauty is the passion for my work. I paint with strong horizon lines, elegantly blended colours, highly textured landscapes and lots of luxuriously layered gold-leaf.
