Westpac Rescue Helicopter winches patient after a truck crash near Upper Hutt

The Wellington-based Westpac Rescue Helicopter was called today at 11:00am to winch a patient who's logging truck had gone off a dirt forestry road and rolled approx 30m down the hill. The truck accident occurred on a forestry road just off the Akatarawa Road North of Upper Hutt.

The driver of the truck was a 39-year-old male from Wanganui he was believed to have been thrown clear of the truck.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter responded to the scene where Wellington Free Ambulance Paramedics and NZ Fire Service personal were attending to the patient. Due to the location of the patient it was decided to winch the patient into the helicopter. The patient was then placed on the winch stretcher and with a Wellington Free Paramedic in a winch harness were winched into the helicopter and flown to Wellington Hospital Emergency Department.

The patient is being accessed for possible back and neck injuries.
