The Life Flight Trust responds to injured hiker in the hills above Porirua

03/07/2011 1500 hours

At 1130 this morning the Life Flight Trust responded to an injured hiker in hills above Porirua.

Life Flight responded with a Wellington Free Paramedic on board the Westpac Rescue Helicopter.

Details of the man's exact location were sketchy as his son had had to walk some considerable distance to summon help. The helicopter was able to uplift the son, who then directed the helicopter back along the tracks to the location of the patient, near the Porirua Scenic Reserve.

Due to the very wet and slippery ground conditions it was decided to winch the injured man in to the helicopter. He was treated on scene by the onboard paramedic and then transported to Wellington Hospital Emergency Department, where he is being further assessed and treated for a leg injury.
