Man injured in fall aboard barge
01/08/2008
The Wellington-based Westpac Rescue
Helicopter was called to the Marlborough Sounds late this afternoon to help a
man injured in a fall.
As we understand it the man was working onboard a mussel barge near
Port Underwood in the Marlborough Sounds, when he fell approximately 2.5 metres
onto the deck just before 3pm.
"Apparently when he fell he hit his head and was knocked unconscious"
says Westpac Rescue Helicopter Crewman Dave Greenberg. "His workmates saw the
fall and were able to prevent him from falling into the water".
The skipper of the boat called 111 and the boat returned to the
Oyster Bay Wharf immediately. When ambulance officers arrived from Picton and
Blenheim the man had regained consciousness but was complaining of hip and back
pain.
The 23 year old Picton man was transported on the Westpac Rescue
Helicopter under the care of a Wellington Free Ambulance Paramedic to Wellington
Hospital.
He is currently in the Wellington Hospital
Emergency Department being assessed and treated. His injuries are not believed
to be life threatening.
