Sun 12/12/2010 5:22 p.m.
The Wellington-based Westpac Rescue Helicopter airlifted an injured tramper from the Tararua Ranges late this morning.
The 45 year old Karori man was seven days into a solo tramp through the Tararua Ranges when he became fatigued and hypothermic and suffered from cuts all over his lower body from multiple falls.
The man was found by two other trampers near Jumbo Hut and they raised the alarm with 111.
The helicopter, with a Wellington Free Ambulance paramedic onboard, landed alongside the injured man around 1145 this morning. After a quick assessment the man was flown to Wellington hospital where he was treated for his injuries.
The man has since been discharged from the Emergency Department.
The Westpac Rescue Helicopter was also called to St Hwy 1 north of Waikanae around 2:00 this morning for a man who was struck by a van. The man was flown to Wellington Hospital.
We do not have photos or video of either incident.
