Driver in serious condition after crash at Te Marua Speedway

18/04/2009

The Wellington based Westpac Rescue Helicopter transported a seriously injured driver from Te Marua speedway tonight.

The helicopter was called to the speedway just before 9pm.

On the helicopter's arrival the team found several Wellington Free Ambulance paramedics treating a 34 year old Upper Hutt man who was injured when his car hit a wall during a race.

"As I understand it the car slammed into a wall on a turn at the south end of the track" says Westpac Rescue Helicopter crewman Dave Greenberg. "Apparently the collision was so severe that the fire brigade had to extricate from the car".

The man is suffering from serious head injuries and is currently in the Wellington Hospital Emergency Department being treated and assessed.

Earlier tonight the Westpac Rescue Helicopter was called to Palmerston North Hospital to transport a seriously injured woman who had been injured this afternoon. The helicopter, with a specialist flight doctor and nurse from Wellington Hospital ICU arrived at Palmerston North just after 6pm. The team was called to transport a 29 year old Palmerston North woman who had been involved in a collision with a truck. She is suffering from multiple serious injuries and is now being treated in Wellington ICU. We have no other details of her accident.
